On the Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of 214921 Petty Officer Arthur George Gaffee, serving on H.M.S. Narbrough with the Royal Navy who died 12/01/1918.

The husband of Emily Louise Gaffee, of 146, Eastfield Road, Milton, Portsmouth.

Whilst serving on HM Submarine J4 he was Initiated into United Service Lodge No 1428, Landport, Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight on the 28th November 1916. He was Passed on the 6th January 1917 and Raised on the 5th April 1917 on both occasions in Waterloo Lodge no 3438, Blyth, Province of Northumberland. He died on the 12th January 1918 aged 34.

HMS Narbrough was an M class destroyer built in 1916 by John Brown and Company at Clydebank, Scotland. Together with her sister ship HMS Opal they ran aground on the Pentland Skerries. There was one survivor.

Arthur George Gaffee is remembered in the Masonic Roll of Honour 1914-18 (London)  and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
