In Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of First Mate Andrew Cunningham Marshall, serving on S.S. British Sovereign with the Mercantile Marine who died 20/09/1918.

The son of George William and Mary Alice Marshall, of North Shields, Northumberland.

The son of George William Marshall and Mary Alice Marshall (nee Robson) of North Shields, Northumberland he was born on 7th May 1891. Obtained his 2nd Mate’s certificate on 1st August 1913, 1st Mate’s on 29th October 1915 and Master’s on 29th September 1917. A Marine Engineer residing at 54 Howard Street, North Shields, he was Initiated on 13th October 1915; Passed 6th February 1916 and Raised on 13th September 1916. He died at Base Hospital No 35, Calais as a result of burns received whilst serving on the S.S. British Sovereign on the 20th September 1918 aged 27 and is buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, Pas de Calais, France Grave reference V.F. 7.

The SS British Sovereign was built on the Tyne by Armstrong Whitworth and Company Limited at Walker launched on 22nd March 1917 and requisitioned on 6th September 1917 as an Royal Fleet Auxiliary Tanker. In the period from 7th to 20th September 1918 ten members of the crew were discharged dead from a base hospital at Calais and buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France.
