On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of C/KX 83038 Stoker 1st Class Andrew Austin Kelly, serving on H.M. Tug Danube III with the Royal Navy who died 13/10/1940.

He was the son of  John and Augusta Kelly, of Ashington

Andrew Austin Kelly was born in 1912, at Ashington, to parents, John Kelly and Augusta Gibson (who married at St. Aidan’s in 1901), being baptised at St. Aidan’s RC Church later that year, their address was 43 Clyde Street. Sadly, Augusta, Andrew’s mother, died in 1931, his father John, died in 1937.

In 1939, Andrews’ only sibling, Josephine, was living at 119 Station Road.

Andrew enlisted in HM Royal Navy, being allocated the service number C/KK 83039 and the rank of Stoker 1st Class.

He was lost at sea on the 13th October 1940, aged 28, whilst aboard HMS Tug Danube III. He is listed on the Chatham Naval War Memorial.
