In Norton (St Mary) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of P/X973EB Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class Alfred Smith serving on H.M.S. Wivern with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 23/05/1940.

The son of William and Louise Elizabeth Smith, of Stockton on Tees and the husband of Frances Ena Smith, of Norton, Stockton on Tees.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory

My Dear Husband
Alfred Smith R.N.R.
Who Died on Active Service May 23rd 1940
aged 35 years
A Hero

also Ena,
Beloved wife of the above
Died Aug. 12th1949
