In Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Turkey (including Gallipoli) is the Commonwealth War Grave of Private 9070 Archibald Lofthouse serving with 1st Battalion Border Regiment, who died 05/08/1915.

The son of William Henry and Grace Lofthouse, of 2, Hylton Street, Sunderland.

Archibald was the fourth son of Norton on Tees innkeeper William Lofthouse and his wife Grace (nee Hodgson) and was born in the last quarter of 1884.  He was brought up in the Highland Lad on Norton High Street along with his brothers John James, Frederick, William, Albert, Herbert, Alexander Septimus and Robert.

His father died in 1901 shortly after his retirement as an innkeeper and the family moved to live in Craister Road, Stockton on Tees.  On 5th November 1906 Archibald joined the army, enlisting with the Royal Army Medical Corps, but three days later transferred to the Border Regiment, changing from one year with the colours to seven years with the colours plus five in reserve.  Posted to the Depot Battalion as Private 9070, in February 1907 he was transferred to 1st Battalion.

Private Lofthouse served in Gibraltar for 8 months until October 1908 and was transferred to Burma and then India, where he served for six years until December 1914.   The Battalion returned to Europe to join the M.E.F. in March 1915 in Gallipoli.

Archibald Lofthouse committed suicide by shooting himself in the head and died in 1st Field Ambulance Main Dressing Station, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the Dardanelles on 5th August 1915.

His younger brother Albert also died in WW1 and his older brother Frederick in WW2.
