Absent from memory never

The son of James and Lavinia Gamble, of Winchester and the husband of Florence Gamble of Winchester.

Arthur Edward (Bertie) Gamble was born in Winchester, Hampshire on 9th August 1890.  The 1911 Census shows him working as a mental nurse at Westbrooke House in Alton, Hampshire.

Bertie’s first wife was Jane Ellen Hemsworth, from Darlington, whom he married on 4th September 1915 in Winchester, where as a Private in the Army Service Corps he was working at the Royal Hants County Hospital.   They had three sons.

Jane died in 1925 and two years later Bertie married her younger sister Florence Hemsworth.

On 14th Nov 1942 the Warwick Castle was being used as a troopship and had just disembarked troops during the North Africa landings and was returning empty as part of Convoy MFK-1X when attacked and hit by torpedoes from U-413 about 200 miles northwest of Cape Espichel, Portugal.

A total of 114 lives were lost (60 crew and 54 service personnel). There were 314 survivors, one of whom was Albert Edward Gamble.

He died whilst visiting Hemsworth family relations at 17 Eskdale Street, Darlington.  The Warwick Castle incident contributed to his death.
