Churchill’s Secret Army North East Region
The Sunderland Antiquarian Society are interested in any information from family members who may have been involved in the Auxiliary Units, (Auxunits). These were a ‘secret stay behind’ resistance force whose role would be to disrupt and and slow down enemy troops following any invasion. They were trained in guerrilla warfare and sabotage. Many of these men were drawn from the ranks of the Home Guard.
The Actor Anthony Quayle was the Intelligence officer for the North East region.
For many years, the existence of the Auxunits remained shrouded in secrecy, with many volunteers taking their story to their grave.
The Coleshill Auxiliary Research Team (CART) was formed to research and publicise the activities of these forgotten men. See www.staybehinds.com
