The following has been extracted by Alan Vickers from
Bethesda Record February, 1919, page 56.
“A memorial Service for our brethren who have fallen
in the Great War, 1914 – 1918, was conducted at Bethesda
on the evening of Sunday, January 12th. The Pastor took
for his subject: “The Christian View of Death and Destiny,”
based on 1, Cor. xv. : 6: “Of whom the greater part remain
unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.” He confined
his remarks under threefold headings as follows:
1. The Christian View of Life;
2. The Christian View of Death;
3. The Christian view of destiny.
On life, he showed that it will be one of perfect peace;
of patient perseverance; of glad expectation.
Of death, he emphasised that it was a change of abode
like the exodus from Egypt to the Promised Land: dying
and death seldom being used in the Scriptures of Christians:
the act and fact of death have been transformed by Christ.
Destiny, the loved ones were consciously happy in the
presence of the Lord. During the service the choir also
rendered the anthem: “The Lord shall wipe away Tears from
off all Faces,” and Mr. Sydney E. Watson touchingly sang
”God shall wipe away all Tears.” We liked the idea of
printing the order of service, with hymns and also the
names of those who had fallen.”
The fourth page of the said order of service contained the following:-
