Memorial Description:

Triptych with dentilled top, under which a strip light is concealed.

At centre is a crucifix with the words “Roll of Honour” above, and names from 1939-45 in a single column on either side.

The central panel is 20 inches x 26 inches (508mm x 546mm)

There are two doors with pointed arched tops, each 21½ inches high x 13 inches wide (546mm x 330mm) each bearing names from 1914-18 in a single column on each door.

Lettering is painted in black with some red.

Underneath is a shelf 26 inches wide x 7 inches (660mm x 177mm) deep.

Names:

a. 35 names and regiments of Servicemen and 2 civilians who died.
b. 15 names and regiments who died.

Notes:

1. The two civilians were killed during the air raid of June 1915. One man was lost in the Lusitania.

2. The Newcastle Journal 09/12/1918 reports that on Saturday Rev. J. Hudson Barker South Shields unveiled a triptych in St Mark’s Jarrow to 30 killed during the war. It was the gift of Mrs Wallace wife of the Vicar Rev. T. Wallace.
