Memorial Description:

Stained glass window of three lights. It depicts
(1) King Edwin representing “the lads from Northumberland”;
(2) St. Martin, patron saint of Ypres, representing Belgium;
(3) St. Louis, representing France and the East.

At the apex of the central light is an angel holding a crown.

At the foot of each saint is the appropriate shield:
(1) the arms of Northumbria as on the banner of St. Oswald preserved at Bardney Abbey and attributed by Camden to Bernicia;
(2) the shield of Ypres;
(3) the shield of Paris.

Plaque with arched top, 36½ inches at its highest point x 22 inches wide (93cms x 56cms).

At centre top is a drawing of Jesus with arms raised, with “Come unto me” in a half circle underneath.

The dedication is below this, followed by the names in two columns.

Notes:

1. Many of the movable objects have been removed from the former church by the new Coptic users. Those which are fixed remain. In this instance, the plaque has been removed.

2. At the unveiling ceremony, a collection was taken for the windows and children of soldiers and sailors who fell.

3. Joan R. Duckett, writing in 2007, says:
St. Augustine’s Church was closed and the Parishes of St Matthew’s, St Philip’s and St. Augustine’s united.  The building then became a Coptic Orthodox Church, still used as such at this time 2007.  The brass plate for Frederick Norman Webster is still in the Church, but the Brass War Memorial was removed by the last Priest in Charge of St. Augustine’s and I have not been able to find out what happened to it. The Church is beautifully kept and used for regular Christian Worship.
