St. Mary the Virgin,
Monkseaton,
who gave their lives in the
World War, 1939-1945
this shrine and
Book of Remembrance,
together with the
oak altar
in the Lady Chapel
are gratefully and humbly dedicated.
“We will remember them”.
Shrine with arched recesses in red brick surround, stone keystone, 46 inches high x 36½ inches wide (1.16m x 926mm).
There are oak doors, arched to match the shape of the recess, 26 inches high x 26¾ inches wide (660mm x 688mm) when closed.
In the hemispherical space above the doors the wood is carved into an intricate design, below which are the dates incised in serif figures.
The centre is lit by an electric light.
The doors open to reveal the Book of Remembrance, 9 inches high x 14½ inches wide (228mm x 337mm) when opened, bound in black leather with gold tooled lettering on the outer cover.
The names are written by hand in black ink.
The dedication states that the altar in the Lady Chapel is part of the memorial.
51 names, ranks, regiments, date and place of death.
Also includes civilians.
