These are they which came out of great tribulation.

Memorial Description:

Roll of Honour behind glass.

It has a wide highly decorated border in ancient manuscript style.

At the top are two circular paintings.

Down the sides are shields bearing the badges of St. George of England and St. Andrew of Scotland.

At the bottom is a circle carrying the red and yellow stripes of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria.

The names are listed in two columns, with those from the Navy at the top followed by the Army, followed by those who died.

All lettering and decoration is hand painted.

Names are in black with red initials and red used for the regiments and ranks.

Names:

23 names from the Navy.
42 names from the Army.
All with ranks and regiments, some with distinctions earned, and whether injured, taken prisoner or killed.
8 names ranks and regiments of those who died.

Notes:

1. The Misses Davies, daughters of the man who unveiled the plaque, made the Roll of Honour “Because they loved the island”.

2. This was found in 2005 in a cupboard and has now been rehung in the church.

3. A Miss Davies also commissioned items from the firm of Hedley Brothers. Is there any connection?
