nobly fought of old
and win with them
the victor’s crown of gold.

Memorial Description:

Roll of Honour 36 inches high x 27 inches wide (914mm x 675mm), behind a glass frame.

Around the edge is a border of tiny flowers including madonna lilies and forget-me-nots and assorted leaves, including holly and oak, and at intervals are painted the regimental badges.

At centre top is a lamb sitting on a cushion, around which is a ribbon with the words “British Church of / St. John the Baptist / Alnmouth. On either side are various flags.

Beneath these are lines from a hymn, with illuminated capitals, and accompanied by a cross, a laurel spray, and an anchor.

Underneath these is a cross with halo and the words “Be thou faithful unto death”; the dove of peace, and a crown of glory with halo and the words “And I will give thee a crown of life”.

Below these, to the left and right are two white panels outlined by laurel sprays, in which are the names of all who served, including those who died, who are identified with a cross beside their names.

Underneath these panels is a row of four angels.

The central column, on a painted blue sky, is of those who died, under the heading “At rest” and above a painting of St. George and the Dragon.

The lettering is crude but the paintings are exquisite.

74 names, ranks and regiments and place of death of all those who served from the church.
19 names only in the central panel of those who died.
