Unveiled March 1917 by Lieut.Col. W.C. Blackett, commander of the County Volunteer Regiment;
dedicated by Dr. H. Hensley Henson, Dean of Durham.

Placed here by the Officials
and friends in affectionate
memory of
Lieut. J.R. Brass, 8th D.L.I.,
Assistant manager of the
Charlaw & Sacriston Collieries
who fell in the Battle of
Ypres, 26th April 1915.
He died a brave soldier for
his King and Country

Memorial Description:

Plaque of white marble inside a wide frame of black marble.

At centre top is the badge of the Durham Light Infantry.

The lettering is incised and coloured black, using a mixture of Roman upper and lower case with the citation in italics.

Notes:

1. At the dedication service, a collection was taken towards maintaining a bed in one of the military hospitals in France.

2. The church has now re-opened under the title of “The Old Church” featuring café, theatre and art gallery.
