a man lay down his life for his friends”.

Plaque 36 inches high x 24 inches wide (912mm x 608mm) on a wood pattress which is 2 inches (50mm) wider surround all round.

The names are contained with a shield-type border which has a spray of leaves draped over the top.

The names are in two columns.

Lettering is in various fonts and coloured black, with some words in red.

1. All the men named were Sunday school teachers.

2. Blucher is a former pit village in Newcastle, about half a mile east of Walbottle. The village grew up around Blucher Pit, which was part of Walbottle Colliery, and named after the Prussian Field Marshal von Blücher – an ally of the Duke of Wellington in the victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Warterloo in 1815. George Stephenson also named one of his early locomotives “Blücher” after von Blücher. The Methodist Church in the village of Blucher was dedicated to Stephenson. Blucher Pit closed in 1956.
