Tyne Improvement Commission HQ., Bewick Street.

Above the fireplace in the entrance hall.

It was removed to the first floor when the fireplace was removed to make way for a new information desk.

Present Location:

Moved to Tyne Dock offices.

In entrance under the stairwell in Navigation House at Tyne Dock and can be seen when entering the building.

Memorial Description:

Plaque approx. 72 inches  high x  60 inches wide ( 182cms x 152cms).

There is a pediment with half-pillars at the sides carved with a column with leaves twining up.

Beneath the pediment are four shields in colour bearing different coats of arms.

The dedication is carried on a panel across the whole width.

Below this are three sunken panels bearing the names from 1914-18 in a single column on each.

Below another single panel has been inserted on which are the names from 1939-45 in three columns.

a. 56 surnames and initials.
b. 37 surnames and initials.

Notes:

1. From the Commission, 397 people enlisted. Those killed included 15 from the official and clerical staff and 41 from the employees. 24 had gained decorations, and three held commissions.

2. Sir Alfred said “Doubtless the response to the country’s call would have been greater had more men been allowed to go, but the work of the Commission had to go on, and no more could be spared.”

3. The original proposal was for the names of officials to be placed on the memorial, but this was later extended to include all who were employed by the Commission.
