Memorial Description:

Plaque approx. 72 inches high by 24 inches wide (183cms x 61cms).

There is a carved border with flowers raised at intervals.

The dedication is in a small panel at the top.

The names are listed in three columns.

Where there have been errors, the letters have been removed and replaced.

Other names have been added afterwards, two each on either side of the cross at the top of the panel, and another added on the cross piece which divides the two sections of the panel.

The names from the Second World War are in a lower panel, which has obviously been added afterwards very skilfully.

All lettering is carved using Roman capitals throughout.

Notes:

1. The Morpeth Herald 17/12/1920 reports the unveiling of an oak tablet in “St. Aidan’s Church, Sleekburn”, which bore 103 names. It is thought that this is erroneous, and it is the tablet in St. John’s which they were reporting.

2. This is one of very few churches which lies north-south rather than east-west. This is thought to be because of the lie of the land in relation to the coal pits in this area.

3. This area was called “Sleekburn” until the arrival of the railway, when it became known as “Bedlington Station”.
