Panels 1914-18 Council Chamber

Newcastle upon Tyne

Memorial Name: Panels 1914-18 Council Chamber (NUT181)

NEWMP Ref No.: NUT181

Parish: Newcastle upon Tyne

Original Location:

Old Town Hall, Groat Market/Mosley Street.

In Council Chamber.

Present Location:

Lost.

Five panels are in private ownership.

Which War:

1914-18

Materials Used:

Honduras mahogany

Present Condition: Dismantled.

Sculptor, Artist or Designer:

Designed by the late Mr. J. Edgar Mitchell;
made by Ralph Hedley and Sons, Newcastle.

Memorial Description:

Wood panelling 42 inches high x 27 feet long x 4 inches deep (107cms x 8.2m x 10cms).

At centre the panelling has a curved top containing the council crest, whilst on a carved ribbon are the words “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori”.

From the photographs, it seems that the names are incised in four, five or six columns, depending on the location of the panel.

All that remains is a series of five panels, all 25½ inches high (65cms).

Three have five columns of names and are 30½ inches wide (77cms), two bearing four columns are 24 inches wide (61cms).

The names are listed under regiments.

Some of the names are outlined, and it is presumed that these are the names of those who fell.

Lettering is incised and gilded using elaborate capitals throughout.

Names:

1200 names and regiments.
See transcript of five panels only.

The missing panels include those for the Northumberland Fusiliers and Durham Light Infantry

Help with the rest would be appreciated.

Notes:

1. “Re the Hedley war memorial for Newcastle City Council. The job book gives Job 1264 Newcastle Council Chamber mahogany Roll of Honour 27 feet by 3ft 6ins by 4 inches with 1200 names. Ordered 17/06/22 finished 08/11/22.”

2. The plaque is the full width between two doors of the Council Chamber, and matches the furnishings of the chamber.

3. At the outbreak of war, 1148 municipal employees enlisted, of whom 160 were killed or died from wounds.

4. The memorial was dismantled and broken up. Five panels were discovered and are now in private ownership.
