Land given by the Watson family of Burnopfield House.
Made by W. Ayton and Sons, Blackhill.
Ownership and Maintenance: Accepted by Cllr. Trotter, Chairman of Tanfield Urban Council, at the unveiling.

Erected by the people of
Burnopfield and District 1914-1918
Obelisk on tapering pedestal on four steps.
The whole is set within a raised kerb 9 inches high x 9 inches thick (228mm x 228mm) which may once have had railings round.
On top of the pedestal is a projecting decorated stone which bears a laurel wreath in each side.
The dedication and names are incised and gilded in Roman capitals on all sides of the pedestal.
The dates are raised in a sunken panel on the bottom step.
The names for 1939-45 have been added to the risers of the bottom step.

1. An original proposal was for war widows’ cottages.
2. Following vandalism and graffiti, in 2005 the whole memorial and site was cleaned and tidied, and the letters re-gilded.
