Memorial Description:

Obelisk, gently tapering, total height approx. 15 feet (4.57m).

The words “Lest We Forget” are incised on the side of the column, above a bronze wreath and inverted torch.

The names are on polished panels at the front and sides of the pedestal.

In front and behind are polished slabs each 27 inches high x 42 inches wide (685mm x 1.06m) leaning against the bottom steps of the column.

The lettering is incised and gilded using Roman capitals throughout.

The whole is set within a small flowerbed with chain link fence surround.

Names:

a. 48 surnames and initials for Whitburn, 21 for Marsden.
b. 26 surnames and initials for Whitburn, 12 for Marsden.

Notes:

1. The chain fence seems to have been added later, as an old photo shows the memorial standing isolated on the village green.

2. The plaque for Marsden was probably added after the demolition of the village.
