Memorial Description:

Obelisk of smooth sandstone on a square pedestal,

This stands on a three-step base, total height approx. 20 feet (6.1m).

It is enclosed within a small paved area with a chain link fence around,

The information regarding 1914-18 is on all four sides of the pedestal, with the names incised in a single column on each face.

The dates of 1939-1945 are incised into the top of the step, while the names are in two columns on the riser of the top step, using all four sides in each case.

The words “Pro Patria” are carved in relief at the base of the shaft, above a laurel wreath.

The replacement plaque for the right side WW1 names is 8½ inches high x 39½ inches wide (22cms x 100cms).

The plaque for Afghanistan is 6 inches high x 18 inches wide (15cms x 46cms).

Notes:

1. Memorial scrolls were also handed to relatives of the fallen by Mr. James Robson, President of the Durham Miners’ Association

2. The name of Sapper Adam Moralee, who died on 05/03/2014 after being injured in Afghanistan, was added to the memorial and dedicated 3rd June 2015.

3. At some stage, probably due to erosion, one of the sides has had a metal plaque attached which gives the names in three columns.
