Memorial Description:

Cross of Saxon type, tall and plain set on a tall pedestal, total height approx. 25 feet (7.63m).

It sits on a paved terrace with semi-circular front, and is approached by three flights of stone steps.

Behind is a brick wall on which are mounted five cast bronze panels, all alike, approx. 3 feet high x 2 feet wide (914mm x 608mm), of which the central one bears the dedication and the names of officers, the names from 1914-18 are listed in two columns on each of two panels to the right and left of centre.

The names from 1939-45 are inscribed on two more bronze panels, identical to the others, fixed to the sides of the pedestal of the cross.

In front of the cross sits a stone block with the words “In memoriam” incised on the front, and spaces for three vases of flowers on the top.

On the front of the pedestal of the cross are the dates “1914-1918” and “1939-1945”, incised.

The lettering on the bronze plaques is in raised Roman capitals throughout.

Names:

a. 271 names, but a few places are indicated where surnames and initials are the same to make differentiation.
b. 94 names.
See transcript

Notes:

1. On this memorial the two Innes-Hopkins brothers have a hyphen between their two surnames. There is a mistake with the initials of the two brothers: one is C.R. which is correct (Charles Randolph) but the other reads C.L. and it should be C.P. (Castell Percy).
