Memorial Description:

Cross on tall octagonal column on square pedestal with single octagonal step, 14 feet high (4.26m).

There are two plaques attached to the square pedestal, both of inverted ‘T’ shape, made of bronze.

The dedication and names for 1914-18 are on the plaque on the front.

Those for 1939-45 are on the right.

On both plaques the names are listed in two columns.

The lettering is in raised sans serif capitals for 1914-18, and Roman capitals for 1939-45.

Notes:

1. The shape of the cross is related to St. Andrew, to whom the church is dedicated.

2. Sir James Trotter was the son of the late Rev. Thomas L. Trotter who was rector of Great Stainton for 50 years.

3. It is unusual to see the 1939-45 war described as the “Great War” but this obviously an exact copy of the 1914-18 plaque.

4. In The Story Durham (formerly Durham County Record Office) are some handwritten sheets (Ref: EP/Ay 14/22 ), which appears to be a list of those who served in 1914-18 with casualties indicated by a cross. These names have been added to the list of those on the memorial. To see the original list, follow the link below.
