Heworth stone cross, bronze plaques, York flagstone surround.

Public subscription.
The site, plus £100, was donated by Col. Burdon, who lost his only son in the war. His wife gave £25.

Cross, 25 feet high (7.6m), of Blomfield type, with bronze Crusader’s sword fixed at the crossing.

It is set on an octagonal base on two steps set on wide octagonal platform.

The whole is surrounded by white posts with chain linking between them.

Bronze plaques bearing the dedication and names have been affixed to the sides of the pedestal.

The lettering is in raised Roman capitals.

1. The proposals also included placing plaques in the churches in Castle Eden and Wingate, and the Roman Catholic Church at Hutton Henry.

2. In 2014 the War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,295 towards the conservation of this memorial. The memorial was cleaned using a DOFF steam cleaning system. Loose and defective mortar was raked out by hand and open joints were re-pointed using lime mortar, colour matched to the stonework.
The bronze plaques were treated with microcrystalline wax.
