This Book of Remembrance and the base

to contain it were given by Mr and Mrs Roland

   N. Brewster to be kept in the Parish Church for the

Thornley British Legion, so that the names of the

Fallen can be read there from at the annual Service of

   Remembrance

These gifts were presented to the Vicar, the

Reverend Philip G. Mold, B.D., by Dr Alexander P. Gray,

President of Thornley British Legion, at a special Service

on Sunday, November 5th, 1961. After the Unveiling,

performed by Mr William Bovill, former Secretary of

Thornley British Legion, they were blessed and dedicated

by the Vicar. Others taking part in the Service were

the Reverend Gordon Johnson, Methodist Minister, and

Captain Audrey Mason, of the Salvation Army.  The

organ was played by Miss Maureen Stark, and the

Mr Harry Hood, of the Thornley Colliery Silver Band.  The

Legion Standards were carried by Mr and Mrs Robert

Slater. Representatives of the Thornley, Wheatley Hill,

Ludworth, Cassop, Coxhoe and Trimdon British Legion
