Notes

1. St. Thomas Church was consecrated in 1877. The church closed in 1963. St.Thomas was sold and demolished. The parishes of St. Hilda and St. Thomas were united and would worship in St.Hilda’s. The church hall was not affected by the sale and was to be used by both parishes.

2. The stained window was removed by workmen of the Durham Dean and Chapter. It was taken into Durham cathedral to be used for repair work and to replace plain glass windows.

3. The Church stood on the site of a Chapel of Ease, built in 1819 on parcel of land which was part of "Fowlers Close" and which supplemented the cramped accommodation at St Hilda's. It was also known as the Westoe Chapel of Ease although the parish contained no part of Westoe. St Thomas Church was built in 1875, largely through the generosity of Alderman John Williamson, and later endowed with a very fine stained glass window by John Redhead in memory of his wife.

4. The bell from St Thomas went to St Oswin's church, also now gone.
