Notes

1. The plaque is surmounted by a flag but nobody can explain whose it is or why it is there.

2. "... the War Memorial Chapel, the screen of which was made of wood from the old box pews. The board in the Chapel shows the names of 192 local men who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919 ... 21 of these under the heading 'Orphan Asylum', were young sailors (the orphaned sons of Sunderland mariners) who had been brought up and trained in nautical matters at the orphanage, built in 1862 by the Freemen and Stallingers, a few hundred yards south of the church" (Book in Sunderland Library)

3. In 1922, the Bishop of Durham dedicated a folding oak door at the west end of the nave to the memory of the fallen. Was this part of the chapel?

4. The church is now managed by The Churches Conservation Trust.
