Unveiled on January 28 1921 by Major General Sir Percival Wilkinson KCMG CB., commanding 50th (Northumbrian) Division.

Memorial Description

Plaque of classical design, 7 feet 7 inches high x 6 feet 9 inches wide, with pilasters at each side. A plain horizontal panel at the top bears the dedication. A similar brass plaque at the bottom carries a quotation. At the very bottom is the school badge raised in half relief inside a laurel wreath. The central part is divided into three glass-fronted panels, each 3 feet 9 inches high x 1 foot 6 inches wide, each of which is decorated by a border of flowers in gold, symbolic of manhood. The lettering on the dedication and panels is hand written in gold, on a blue background, using sans serif capitals, the colours signifying “Eternity”, “Faith” and “Fidelity”. The brass plaque is inscribed in Roman capitals.

Ye shall remember with humble thankfulness the Great / Sacrifice of the following old boys of this school / who went forth on the side of honour and right in / the Great War 1914 - 1918, and who came not home again.
"Nothing is here for tears Nothing to wail / or knock the breast; No weakness, No contempt, / Dispraise or blame; Nothing but well and fair / and what may quiet us in a death so noble."

1. When first unveiled the plaque had an elaborate top which has since been removed. It bore the Binyon verse “They shall not grow old . . .”
