Memorial Description:

Roll of Honour behind glass in an oak case.

The case has a wide decorated top which has a painted North Eastern Railway Company badge, centred at the top in the Crown.

The title and dedication are incised into the wood below the badge with gold painted gilt centred. Not all lettering is incised. Only the wording North Eastern Railway and Roll of Honour are incised. (Roman Capitals), the rest of the lettering is hand painted on in sans serif.

The names are printed on a white sheet of paper in two columns, beside each of which is the rank and regiment and some military decorations.

All lettering is a mix of Roman and sans serif.

Size Overall 42 inches, (1.96m) wide x 44 inches, (1.11m) high. The ROH Memorial paper insert is 27 inches (685mm) Wide x 18 inches (457mm) high.

Notes:

1.  At one time it was thought that there should be a memorial in some central position in Newcastle to the Railwaymen of the district, but the projected scheme had fallen through, probably in view of the Railway Company’s intention to erect a memorial at York. However, it had been decided to proceed with the proposal for a framed Roll of Honour representative of the three goods stations.

2. The War Memorial is now situated in the Staff facilities corridor near the staff canteen. Excellent condition. Well looked after and maintained. 2024.

3. Evidence of Gold paint in the past touching up some of the Incised letters, but not to the detriment of the overall appearance of the War Memorial.

30/1/1922 reports proposal for a memorial plaque and the appointing of a committee.

The Journal
29/10/2010 carries a letter from Roy Bell requesting that the memorial be retained.
