Memorial Description

Lychgate. Estimated overall height 15-16 feet. Overall width, 19 feet 2 inches including a 1 foot buttress at each side of inner wall; arch is 8 feet 9 inches high x 7 feet 10 inches wide. Wooden gates are each 4 feet 7 inches high and 3 feet 8 inches wide on their hinges.
Over the arch, a stone sword overlaid with a wreath have been carved and fixed to the wall, with the sword blade overlying the words "In Memoriam" carved in relief on a stone plaque. There are also small recesses lower down on the front on either side of the gates which bear the dates "1914-1918" and "1939-1945" on the panel at their back.
The names of those who served and those who died in 1914-18 are incised in three columns on the north wall inside the gate, and carried over to the south wall.
The names for 1939-45 are listed in a single column in a north recess on the right hand wall.

All lettering is in Roman capitals.

Built of stone with roof hung with stone slabs.

"To the glory of God and in proud / memory of the men from / this countryside who fell in / the cause of right and freedom / (names) / "also in gratitude for services / rendered in the same cause by those / named below and on the opposite wall".

b. On stone inside lychgate :
To Those / who died in / the World War / 1939-1945

Some of the letters are barely readable, and in some cases only the vestiges of letters remain.

Notes

1. Pevsner describes the lychgate as being in the Arts and Crafts style.

2. Work started in April 2018 to restore the 72 names which were fading away on to new plaques, thanks to a donation of ten thousand pounds from the Northumberland Freemasons.
