Back page
God bless our splendid men,
Send them safe home again,
God save our men!
Keep them victorious,
patient and chivalrous,
They are so dear to us,
God save our men!
Roll of Honour.
This is a printed book.
At centre of title page is a shield-shaped Union flag supporting four flags.
The second title page carries the names of the places involved alongside the etching of a soldier with rifle reversed.
The end page carries the Union and Royal flags crossed with a crown between, situated above a verse presumably sung to the tune of the National Anthem.
779 names, ranks and regiments, listed under Township,
with the names of those who died at the top in emboldened lettering.
1. Copies of these were sold for one shilling each.
2. Only 18 men are indicated as having been killed compared with 49 on the war memorial itself.
3. After an inaugural meeting on the 7th June 1879 there followed weekly meetings in the Sons of Temperance Hall, Norfolk Street, North Shields. The YMCA grew in popularity. Within a year larger premises were needed. Meetings were moved to 53 Tyne Street and in 1897 to 51 Camden Street. In 1920 the YMCA moved to a building in Bedford Street (which is still owned by the YMCA) where it remained until 1938. The present building is on Church Way in North Shields. Today we are known as YMCA North Tyneside.
Northumberland Archives
has a copy Ref. 3472.
Sources of quotations
“Greater love hath no man than this . . .” St. John 15 v 13;
“God bless our splendid men . . . “Not ascertained, but obviously meant to be sung to the tune of the National Anthem)
