Memorial Description

Roll of Honour in wood frame. There is an elaborate border culminating in roundels in each corner. At the top is a scroll bearing the words "Roll of Honour". The names of those who fell are in a frame entitled "In Memoriam" listed in five columns. Those who served are listed underneath is six columns. Lettering is in plain capitals throughout.

At the bottom is a statement about the restoration of the photo.

Notes

1. In 2017 the hope was expressed of having an enlarged photo of the memorial placed somewhere in Sunderland.

2. 285 employees had joined the army and navy, of whom 41 had been killed.

3. From Yard funds, the sum of £178 had been paid to the dependents of those who served and £180 to next-of-kin of those who fell.

4. £950 8s 10d had been raised by workmen and officials for local charitable and war institutions. £5,100 18s was invested by employees through the War Savings Association certificates.

5. Each employee who served was given a medal by Mr. R.A. Bertram. They were also given a gold watch, albert and medal from the firm. Two civilians were also honoured.

6. The copy we show here is of a photo which must have been taken and distributed at the time. Photographic restoration was undertaken by Vivid Recollections (Aust.) in 2017 with a note at the bottom which reads: *Initials and name illegible due to the damaged state of the original photograph from which this restoration has been made."
