“Small pulpit”. A small brass plaque bore the dedication.

Presented by Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Plater to the Laygate Mission and Institute, to the glory of God, and with deep gratitude for the safe return of their three sons and the boys of the Mission, and in commemoration of Bro. Ralph Wake, who was killed in action, 1918, in the Great World War.

Notes
1. The brother Wake referred to here is 79566 Private Ralph Wake, who served with the 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). He was born in Westoe, enlisted in Newcastle and resided at South Shields. He was killed in France and Flanders on the 23/10/1918. He was formerly in the 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers 78084.
2. “Prior to the commencement of the evening service on Sunday Mr. E.M. Glenwright, who presided over a large congregation, announced that he had no idea they were going to have such a splendid gift handed to them on that night, and he called upon Mr. J.E. Plater, who formally presented for the use of the mission, a small pulpit which he dedicated ‘To the glory of God and the uplifting of the people to a higher ideal of life’”.
