Luther, T.S., L.Smn., 1917
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1030 Leading Seaman Thomas Simpson Luther, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 31/12/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Thomas was born on 14th March 1890. He was working as a blacksmith living with his parents, Thomas and Margaret at 2, North Row, East Holywell when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 2nd November 1914.

He joined the 4th Platoon, "A" Company of the Collingwood Battalion and was wounded in Gallipoli on 4th June 1915. Thomas was invalided to the UK on 21st June 1915 suffering from Seprovitis of the right knee.

He joined the Nelson Battalion in France on 26th February 1917 and served until 23rd April 1917 when he was hospitalised with a shrapnel wound to the left hand.

Thomas rejoined the Nelson Battalion on 23rd June 1917 and was posted as killed in action on 31st December 1917.

Thomas Simpson Luther is remembered in Earsdon on E3.02 and E3.03 and in Tynemouth on T36.14 page 17
