On the Helles Memorial is the name of PO/390(S) Private William Jarvis, serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry who died 23/09/1915.

In St.Peter's Churchyard is a family headstone for Jarvis which includes William Jarvis who died in 1915.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

William was born on June 2nd 1895 and was working as a miner living with his parents, John and Elizabeth at 14, Store Street, Cambois when he enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry on November 17th 1914.

He joined the Portsmouth Battalion and served in Gallipoli until he was reported as killed in action on September 23rd 1915.

William Jarvis was born at Cambois, Northumberland on June 2nd 1895 to parents John, a coal miner from Norfolk and Elizabeth Jarvis who was born at Chevington in Northumberland.

In the 1901 Census William is shown to be four years old and his family, which included siblings James, 10, Sophia, 6, John, 2 and Jane, 11 months, lived at 6, Gees House Cambois. Williams’s father was a hewer in the coal mines.

In 1911 William worked in the coal mines as a shaft lad living in his parents’ house at 14, Store Row Cambois.

Military records show William enlisted at York November 17th 1914 and embarked RM Brigade May 9th 1915. He was with the Portsmouth Battalion MEF (Dardanelles) from May 30th 1915 to September 23rd 1915 when he died. CWGC records confirm he was the son of John and Elizabeth Jarvis of 14, Store Row, Cambois Colliery, Blyth Northumberland.

William Jarvis is remembered in Cambois on C6.02 and West Sleekburn on W34.01
