Whipps, J., Gnr., 1917
In Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux, Pas de Calais, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 65413 Gunner John Whipps, serving with the 210th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, who died 20/05/1917.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

John Whipps was the son of Edward and Susannah (nee Jay) Whipps. His parents were from Southminster, Essex and married in 1869 in Maldon, Essex.

He was born in 1887, and at the time his Father was a saw mill labourer. John was born in Dunston, Durham. The family lived in Dunston West, Whickham, Gateshead.

They eventually, by 1911 had 9 children, 4 living and 5 who had died.

The 1901 census shows John was a visitor at the home of dairyman Thomas Havis, at Railway Terrace, Dunston, Whickham.

In 1911 he was a boarder at the home of John and Nellie Macallister, 71 Ninth Row, Ashington, Northumberland.

John married Elizabeth Gibson in 1913.

Morpeth Herald 01/06/1917 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR
WHIPPS.- Died of wounds received in action May 20th, 1917, Gr. [sic] J. Whipps, R.G.A., husband of E. Whipps, 30 Gordon Terrace, Stakesford [sic], aged 32.

John Whipps is remembered at Bedlington on B15.06, and at Stakeford on S71.02
