On the Helles Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1284 Able Seaman James Charlton, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 20/06/1915.

A page in the Roll of Honour in St. Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea states that James was born in 1895.

He was a miner living with his brother at 42 Meldon Terrace, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

He enlisted into the Hawke Battalion on 7th November, 1914. He was reported missing, presumed killed in action on 20th June 1915.

James Charlton is remembered in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on N10.06 and N10.14
