NEWBIGGIN-BY-THE-SEA

Armstrong, R., Pte., 1916
On Thiepval Memorial) is the name of 23777 Private Robert Armstrong, serving with 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment who died 12/10/1916.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Robert, was born at Amble in 1889, the son of George Dawson Armstrong (died 1891) and his wife Margaret who were both from Newbiggin by the Sea. Before enlisting he worked as a miner.

He enlisted 8th December 1915, no. 28998, Northumberland Fusiliers. He joined the Duke of Wellington Regiment 21st September 1916 and was reported missing 12th of October 1916.

At his death his next of kin was his mother Margaret Storey of Ebenezer House, 10 Front Street, Newbiggin by the Sea.

He was the recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

He is possibly remembered in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on N10.06 and N10.14, but there is more than one "R. Armstrong" from the village, so it is not clear whose name is shown.
