In Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbi, Somme, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 22/1286 Private John George Wilkinson serving with 22nd Tyneside Scottish Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 11/06/1916.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

John George born about 1891 was the eldest son of Edward and Alice Wilkinson of 3 Lynwood Avenue, Newbiggin by the Sea and husband of Alice (later remarried Dobinson) of 12, Third Row, Ashington.

John George enlisted at Bedlington and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers.

His brother Hugh died at Gallipoli 9th August 1915 and then another brother Edward was killed 7th August 1917.

John George was killed 11th June 1916.

He was a recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

John George Wilkinson is remembered in Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.03, N10.06, N10.14 and N10.15 and at Ashington on A17.43
