Dunbar, J., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 21/809 Private James Dunbar, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

James was born in 1889 in Barrington to Thomas and Maria Dunbar. He became a miner like the other men in his family and lived all his life in the Bedlington Station area before enlisting.

James joined the Tyneside Scottish and trained in Alnwick and on Salisbury Plain before being sent to France in January 1916. He is one of the many Tyneside Scottish who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His body was never found and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06
