William McCabe was born in 1889 at Bedlington, Northumberland. His parents were Thomas, a coal miner born at Morpeth, and Jane McCabe born at Blyth. In 1901 William, aged about 1 was living at 16, Chestnut Street, Woodhorn, Ashington with siblings William 11, John 9, Albert 4. William, a hewer in the coal mines, married Margaret Ayre in 1910 and in the 1911 Census his family was living at Rose Cottage, Choppington Station at the house of the his wife’s parents with their son Thomas. Prior to enlisting at Bedlington William lived at Vulcan Place, Bedlington. CWGC records confirm he was the son of the late Mrs Jane Hedley (formally McCabe) of 1, Howard Terrace, Bedlington and the husband of Margaret James (formally McCabe) of 11, Hollymount Terrace, Bedlington.
Williams’s brother Albert also died in action in 1916.
