BEDLINGTON

Green, M.F,. Cpl., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 23/982 Corporal Mark Fairhurst Green, serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Morpeth Herald 25/08/1916 carries the following:

Corporal F.M. [sic] Green, Bedlington, missing.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Mark was born in Barrington in 1886, the only child of Robert and Margaret Green. In 1891 the family were living at Wood Row, Bedlington Station and in 1901 they had moved to Railway Row Barrington. Mark's father was a miner, but Mark was unusual in that he became a hairdresser rather than following his father into working at the pit. In 1909 he married Eleanor Jane Lamb and they had two children, Margaret in 1910 and Robert in 1914. In 1911 the family were living at 7, Gordon Terrace, Bedlington. Hairdressing must have been a profitable business because Mark is one of only a handful of people I have found for whom there is a probate record.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06 and B15.26 page 21
