Selby, J.P., Pte., 1915

In the Gibraltar (North Front) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4541 Private Joseph Prideaux Selby, serving with the 8th Battalion (Service) Northumberland Fusiliers who died 03/10/1915.

Joseph was born June 1885 at 34 Clarges Street, St Georges in London, he was the younger son of Beauchamp Prideaux Selby, of Pawston, Mindrum, Northumberland, J.P. Barrister-at-Law, [born at Durham] and his wife Fanny Jean, [born at Windsor], daughter of the late Joseph Pocklington Senhouse, of Netherhall, Cumberland.

He had a elder brother Beauchamp Henry Selby.

Joseph was educated privately, due to poor health and subsequently at W.G. Podmore's, Grange-over-Sands. Also at Aspall Hall in Suffolk and in Jersey.

In 1891, the family including 7 servants and a governess were residing at 12 Hesketh Crescent, Torquay, Devon.

He volunteered on the outbreak of the European War, and enlisted at Alnwick, went to Malta with his regiment in July 1915.

He served on the Gallipoli front from the 10th July 1915, and was involved in the landing near Lala Baba at Suvla Bay on the 6th of August 1915.

He contracted dysentery and died on his way home at the Military hospital at Gibraltar 3rd October 1915.

In his will of 14th January 1916, he left effects of £5581 7s 9d to his father.

[The 8th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, was raised at Newcastle in August 1914 as part of Kitchener's First New Army. After initial training close to home, they moved to Belton Park, Grantham. On the 4th of April 1915 the Division assembled at Witley and Frensham for final training. They served with 34th Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division proceeding to Gallipoli in July 1915 sailing from Liverpool to Murdos, landing near Lala Baba at Suvla Bay on the 6th of August 1915. On the 20th December 1915 the Division was withdrawn from Gallipoli to Imbros and then to Egypt in January 1916 where they took over defence of a section of the Suez canal.]

He is remembered on Kirknewton K15.01, K15.08 and Mindrum M10.01
