John was the son of Thomas and the late Isabella of 14 Parmontley Street, Scotswood. He served with the Depot Battalion. He enlisted on 19th February 1916 and was discharged on 17th December 1917. His medical record stated: ‘Diabetes, attributed to active service’. He was awarded the Silver War Badge on 14th January 1918.
