Menin Gate Memorial

On the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial is the name of 7114 Private Thomas Ballantyne, serving with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/03/1915.

Thomas Ballantyne was born on the 28th February 1886, at Dunston, Durham, he was the son of Thomas Ballantyne.

He was educated at St Dominic's School at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Thomas married at Newcastle-upon-Tyne 6th June 1906, Margaret Nathans (44 Byron Terrace, Shieldfield, Newcastle), daughter of C.H. Dagg, and had two sons and two daughters. Thomas Herbert born 28th January 1907, Edward born 3rd November 1912, Sarah Elizabeth born 16th August 1910 and Margaret Alina born 12th December 1914.

He enlisted in the 1/5th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers on the 22nd June 1905.

Thomas then re-enlisted on the 2nd August 1908. On the outbreak of the war, he was drafted into the 1st Battalion at the front. He was killed in action on the 1st March 1915 at Neuve Chapele.
