Mundle, E.R., Pte., 1915
In Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord is the Commonwealth War Grave of 13759 Private Ernest Ranson Mundle, serving with the Canadian Infantry who died 04/05/1915.

Barry Greenbank has provided the following:

Ernest Ranson Mundle was born 8th December 1880 in Winlaton, Co. Durham.

The 1881 Census shows the family living at 48 Holly Avenue, Jesmond. His father, Arthur who was born at Corsenside, was aged 29 and worked as a mining engineer. His mother, Annie, had been born in Chester-le-Street, and was now aged 26. A brother, Harry, aged 2, was born in Newcastle. Ernest was aged 1. An uncle, Robert, aged 23, lived with them. He was a mining engineer, who had been born in Ryton on Tyne. There was also a servant.

In 1891 the family had moved to 20 Moor View, Jesmond. Arthur, aged 39, was a mining engineer and surveyor. Annie was 26, Harry A. was aged 12, and Ernest R was 11. There was a cousin, Nora, aged 9, born at North Ormsby.

The 1901 census carries the same information, except that Nora, now aged 19, had been adopted.

By 1911 the family had moved to St. George's Terrace, Jesmond. Arthur was now a mining engineer and Royalties Agent. This was when Ernest started to played cricket for the St. George's team at Jesmond in 1896, aged 15. He was No. 11 in the second team, but was never a first team regular.

On 13th May 1912 Ernest Ranson arrived in Quebec from Liverpool on the 'Empress of Ireland'. He was a single, 32 year old, a surveyor.

On 20th September 1914 he signed up to go to war. His next of kin was his mother, Annie. He became a private in the Saskatchewan Regiment. He died of wounds at a casualty clearing station, and was buried at Bailleul. His estate amounted to £241 1s 8d.
