Lucas, L., Pte., 1916
On Thiepval Memorial is the name of 34310 Private Leonard Lucas serving with the 8th (Service) Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment who died 08/10/1916.

Lorna Wilkinson has submitted the following:-

Leonard Lucas was born 1893 in London. In 1911 he is a boarder at 'Brookville' Cockerton Darlington lodging with Mr. and Mrs Charles William Pawson. Leonard stated that Mrs Pawson was his aunt but no connection with any of the Pawson family or anything about Leonard prior to 1911 has been found. Leonard was employed as a carriage cleaner with North Eastern Railway in 1915.

Leonard enlisted as 32/103 Private in the 32nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers at York on 22nd November 1915. He was 5 foot 4 ¾ inches tall, weighed 145 pounds and was aged 22 years.

Leonard went to France 1st July 1916 and was wounded on 5th August, admitted to 70th Field Ambulance with shell shock 6th August and the following day 7th August 1916 returned to duty.

Leonard was transferred to the York and Lancaster regiment on 10th September. There is a war diary entry which records two men missing after action at Le Sars/Martinpuich in which 5 were killed and 14 wounded on the 8th October.
