Wilkinson, J.B., Lieut., 1916
In Bethune Town Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Lieutenant John Bright Wilkinson, serving with the Royal Engineers who died 23/06/1916.

The Cricket Club plaque unveiling programme gives the following:

Lieutenant J.B. Wilkinson.

Served in the South African War, being one of six who were selected to represent the Local Volunteers. In 1915 he joined the 225th Coy. (Stockton) Royal Engineers with the rank of Quartermaster. Promotion quickly followed. Early in 1916 he went out France as 1st Lieutenant, and was shot by a Sniper on the dawn of June 23rd of the same year.

For many years he was an indefatigable worker in the cause of Stockton Cricket, and had occupied the positions of Secretary and Captain of the first XI. He was a brilliant fielder, and headed the batting averages in 1902.
