The 'Bedan' School Magazine Roll of Honour list
David George Marcus Anderson was born on the 20th May 1895 at Denny, Stirling, the son of John Anderson, Postmaster, Howich, Lancaster, and his wife, Anna.
He was educated at the Bede Collegiate School at Sunderland and after leaving school in 1910, he was employed on the staff of the Marquis of Londonderry's Offices, Seaham Harbour.
David Anderson originally enlisted in to the Grenadier Guards on the 6th March 1913. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from February 1916.
He took part in operations around Ypres, and on the Somme was wounded at Ginchy 11th September 1916, while carrying a badly wounded comrade to the clearing station, although wounded himself in the knee.
Then sent to England on sick leave, and on recovery returned to France with the Machine Gun Guards. He was killed in action at Pilkem and Langemarck and was buried at Captain's Farm.
His commanding Officer later wrote:- He came through unscathed through all the battle of 31st July. A Bomb blew up the dug-out just before his section was relieved. All his officers, N.C.O.'s and his comrade highly appreciated Private Anderson's sterling qualities. Although dying himself, he never complained, his whole solicitude was centred on his wounded comrades by his side-how they were- unselfish to the last. He was unmarried.
