MILLFIELD (Sunderland)

Waggott, G.M., 2nd Lieut., 1918
On the Ploegsteert Memorial is the name of Second Lieutenant Garibaldi Matthewson Waggott, serving with theNorthumberland Fusiliers who died 13/04/1918.

Garibaldi Matthewson Waggott, born 13 October 1897 in 42 Lime Street, North Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland (Source: Birth Certificate. Sunderland Dec 1897 10a 602); died between 11 - 14 April 1918 in Western Front, France. He was the son of Garibaldi Mark Waggott and Catherine Matthewson.

Educated at North Eastern County School, Barnard Castle , Durham DL12 8UN 1911- 1914.
Postcard dated 12 July 1914 to Master GM Waggott at N E County School, from KW (Kate Waggott?) in Shanghai, reads "Dear G, Your letter received on the 10th. Will write for this mail. I thought those Postcards would interest you K.W." Picture of "Field guns on the "Rain Flower Terrace", Nanking , captured by the Revolutionaries.

Went to Shanghai in October 1914 to join the Asiatic Petroleum Company. In November 1915 he volunteered for service and came to England on the P&O Nagoya. He joined the London Rifle Brigade and then transferred to the King's Own Royal Rifles. After 6 months in France he went to St John's College Cambridge to gain his commission. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in 16th Northumberland Fusiliers in June 1917 and then served in France until April 1918.
Reference S/Lt WO374/70838 (1225) at Kew.

Killed on April 13th 1918 while attached to 1/6th Bn "D" Co. Northumberland Fusiliers.His parents were then living at 517 Stanhope Road, South Shields NE33/NE34

Remembered on Roll on Honour, Barnard Castle Chapel, side wall of chapel

He is remembered at Barnard Castle on B135.04 and B135.20 at Millfield on M44.04 and M44.08 and at Sunderland on S140.048
